Abstract: In Algeria, sheep farming accounts for half of the GDP of agriculture. It is mainly concentrated in the
steppe territories which have undergone many changes. This has created a situation of high uncertainty in
livestock management due to the current availability of basic agro-pastoral resources. Agropastors, regardless of
their capacities and resources (capital / assets) of production, cannot escape the various disturbances. However,
the national sheep stock is showing a clear increase. It has risen from 10 million head in 1975-1977 to more than
27 million in 2014. The question of this study is to identify the strategies and the levers on which the breeders
manage their system to face the uncertainties. Our hypothesis concerns the relevance of the logics of breeders to
combine their assets (natural, physical, financial, social, human and knowledge capitals) with opportunities that
are available to them to maintain themselves. In order to understand these strategies and logics, we used
participatory agro-socio-anthropological methods using a general systemic approach. Our multivariate analyzes,
concerning 86 agropastoralists, made it possible to distinguish 4 groups of breeders. The results show that all the
breeders studied in the El-Guedid-Djelfa-Algeria region develop logics of permanent adaptation. They combine
their capital (resources - assets) in a varied way in their decisions that condition the way they will apprehend and
anticipate situations of uncertainty. According to their capital endowment, breeders implement diversified
strategies. They may include: diversification of products, income, access to resources, sheep's potential and
mobility. The latter are essential to valorize the external and internal resources to their territories, in order to
ensure the forage needs.
